Children of the Gods Continues
Last week, the incomparable Jessica Therrien announced the release date for the second book in her Children of the Gods series, and this week we've decided to bring the news here as well. For those who have been keeping tabs on the series, the first book,Oppression, was released this past February to considerable acclaim. The story of a girl much older than she appears who discovers that she is one of many descendants of the real Greek gods quickly became a teen bestseller at BN.com. Still one of our bestselling titles, it's not hard to see why. The story appeals to fans of Twilight, The Hunger Games, X-Men, and classical Greek epics. What's not to love?
Of course, the book ended on just the weeniest bit of a cliffhanger (we'll not spoil the first one here, just in case there's one of you left who hasn't read it), so we're all highly anticipating book two. Which...will be released May 28th, 2013 - barring an attack by oppressive polytheistic deities - and which will be titled: Uprising.
Now if that doesn't get you excited, I don't know what will. More details on the story, the cover, and the release will appear in the coming months, but in the meantime, perhaps it would be appropriate to brush up on your Greek mythology.

Early “Bard” Registration is Open and We Got Writers Aboard
Six months out and already so much to report. Returning to the SCWC with not just one, but two books just out is none other than that irrepressible literary illuminati Robert Ward. Of Renegades: My Wild Trip from Professor to New Journalist... (Tyrus Books) Library Journal hails, "essential reading for those interested in new journalism." And of The Best Bad Dream (Mysterious Press), Bob's latest novel, T. Jefferson Parker, Edgar-winning author of The Border Lords, proclaims it, "smart, startling, a little wicked. The writing is perfect pitch and the characters feel like people you’ve met and known... A terrific read." Now guess which Academy Award-winning writer will be with us?
Michael Blake, who nabbed an Oscar for the screen adaptation of his novel Dances With Wolves, will be making his SCWC debut at LA10. Michael's written quite a lot since that first widely rejected manuscript was initially released to little fanfare. Into the Stars, his latest historical novel, is out from ZOVA Books.
Speaking of ZOVA Books, Oppression, book one of Jessica Therrien's "Children of the Gods" YA paranormal romance/adventure series, is the no. 5 best-selling teen Nook book at the moment, directly behind the remarkably successful Hunger Games trilogy. Jessica, of course, was discovered by ZOVA at our SD25 event and we couldn't be more thrilled for her. Good book. Good read. Good author.
And yet another ZOVA author is making his debut. SCWC director Wes Albers' novel, Black & White, hits the shelves today (and Nook and Kindle)! New York Times bestseller Gayle Lynds (The Book of Spies) calls it, “Gritty and rewarding… A top-notch cop novel. Watch out, Joseph Wambaugh!” Andrew Peterson (Forced to Kill) calls it, “A gutsy look at the inside life of a street cop. Thoroughly entertaining!” While Gary Phillips (The Underbelly) has this to say, “Gripping. Rugged. Authentic... Bring your diapers.”
Obviously, there's lots of authors, agents, editors and other publishing professionals still to be announced so be sure to join our RSS feed, or subscribe to our .COMmunity newsletter to keep up to date. Follow us on the SCWC Facebook page for plenty of other information and writerly good times.
Early "Bard" Registration is now open. Register by May 1 and save $75 off Full Conference. In the meantime, for another good story well told, check out Wes speaking at last month's SD26 event below.

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) February 28, 2012
Jessica Therrien is releasing the first title in her “Children of the Gods” paranormal romance and adventure series. “Oppression” is the first of three books in the series published by ZOVA Books, a mid-sized publishing firm based in the Los Angeles area. The novel combines traditional Greek mythology with contemporary young adult fiction in a narrative that will appeal to fans of “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.”Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) February 28, 2012
ZOVA Books has established themselves as a premier mid-sized publisher of genre and literary fiction, representing such bestselling novelists as “Dances With Wolves” author and Academy Award winning screenwriter, Michael Blake; Pulitzer Prize nominee for “Sacajawea,” Anna Lee Waldo; and current Wall Street Journal bestselling author A.K. Alexander. ZOVA was first introduced to Therrien’s work at a writers’ conference in San Diego in early 2011. Since then, ZOVA has established her as the first in their catalog of young adult fiction.
“We have been looking to develop our children’s and young adult catalog, not simply because it’s a strong market in the book industry, but most of all because it’s an audience we deeply care about,” says ZOVA publisher Molly Lewis. “Jessica Therrien has this incredible ability to reach a wide variety of readers, from romance lovers to fans of dystopian fiction. ‘Oppression’ is a wonderful set-up to a highly-anticipated series.”
“Oppression” puts a new spin on traditional Greek mythology, combining a unique coming-of-age story with an introduction to an X-Men-like universe. The book follows the character Elyse as she realizes that she is not alone in the world. There are others like her, people with unusually long life-spans and special abilities. It’s the start of a new life for her, one where her choices will have far-reaching consequences, not just for herself but potentially for the whole world.
Jessica Therrien has established herself as one of the most highly anticipated novelists of the year, winning a number of awards for her flash fiction and breaking numerous rankings on both Goodreads and Amazon. Her work is represented for film and television rights by Circle of Confusion. Foreign rights of “Oppression” are represented by Whitney Lee of The Fielding Agency.
ZOVA Books is actively developing its catalog of children’s fiction, both for middle grade and young adult readers, with such releases as Clive London’s “Prince Albert and the Doomsday Device,” which received a Kirkus starred review and was recently listed among Kirkus’ New and Notable Fiction list, and Jessica Therrien’s young adult paranormal romance novel, “Oppression.”
"Oppression" is distributed through Baker & Taylor and available for sale with Amazon, Barnes & Noble and wherever fine books are sold.

ZOVA Books is a boutique publishing firm representing such acclaimed authors as Dances With Wolves novelist and Academy Award winning screenplay writer, Michael Blake, as well as the Pulitzer Prize nominated bestselling author of Sacajawea, Anna Lee Waldo. Their partnership with Jessica Therrien marks a significant expansion of their catalog into the young adult readership.
Jessica Therrien's work was first noticed by ZOVA Books at the Southern California Writer's Conference held in San Diego, where she discussed her manuscript with ZOVA author, Michele Scott, during one of the conference's critical feedback programs. Mrs. Scott, who is currently releasing her novel Happy Hour with ZOVA Books, brought the debut author to her publishers' attention.
Mrs. Therrien's young adult title, Oppression, tells the story of a young woman who discovers that she belongs to a secret society of individuals with extraordinarily long life spans and unusual abilities. Fearful of prophecies about their only daughter, her parents kept her hidden from the world – and the society – for as long as they could. But when their own untimely deaths leave her to fend for herself, the truth of her origins and the fateful prophecy find her at last. Joining the ranks of such widely popular works as the Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games, and the Mortal Instruments series, Mrs. Therrien's paranormal romance/adventure promises to be the next fan-favorite in its genre.
ZOVA Books Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Silva, says, “We are incredibly excited to launch Jessica Therrien's young adult novel, not only because Oppression is such compelling work, but because Jessica herself is such a dynamic author. The Sierra Booster
They printed it! After days and days of bugging my sister on a near constant basis, I finally got to see the article. Thanks Jan Buck for sharing my story.
Sierra Booster is a newspaper serving the eastern sierras including but not limited to the Sierra Valley, Downieville, Loyalton, Sierra County and Portola, Graeagle, Quincy, Greenville, Chester, Lake Almanor and all of Plumas County. Our coverage extends to Truckee, Truckee Meadows Region, Lake Tahoe and in the North Reno Nevade area.
The Article:
JESSICA THERRIEN, former Chilcoot resident, is now a debut author promoting her upcoming novel, Oppression. She has recently signed her first publishing contract with ZOVA Books.
After attending school in Loyalton from kindergarten to high school, Jessica actually moved her senior year to southern California and graduated in 2003 from Glendale High School. Jessica attended Cal State Long Beach for three years, where she says she discovered Chinese, and ultimately majored in it. In 2006, she studied abroad for a year in Taiwan and developed her language skills further, and graduated from San Diego State University in 2008.
Jessica currently lives in Chula Vista with her fiance, with plans to be married on July 4, 2011, so her publisher suggested she use her soon-to-be married name, Jessica Therrien.
Oppression tells the story of a young woman who discovers she belongs to a secret society of individuals with extraordinarily long life spans and unusual abilities. Fearful of prophecies about their only daughter, her parents kept her hidden from the world and society as long as they could. When their own untimely deaths leave her to fend for herself, the truth of her origins and fateful prophecy find her at last.
"What inspired my novel was my search for the next big thing. After reading through the Twilight Saga, the Hunger Games Trilogy, the Harry Potter Series, I was eager to dive into something just as compelling. After reading a few other Young Adult books, I just wasn't finding it, so I decided I would write it. Being a fan of the genre, I felt I knew what people like me were looking for in a YA novel, and with an English teacher for a mother, I felt I had the education and ability to write an interesting story."
Jessica's paranormal romance/adventure promises to be the next fan-favorite in its genre.
