My First Children's Book - THE LONELIEST WHALE

Happy Book Release Day to ME!!!

THE LONELIEST WHALE, my first children's book, is available TODAY!! It's a story I've had in my heart for a long time, and it was inspired by a real whale. If you haven't heard of The Loneliest Whale, feel free to look him up, I'm sure you'll quickly fall in love with him. I did, and with that I felt compelled to write him a happy ending.

I first heard of the whale in a BBC article my husband showed me:

In 1989 US Naval ships were using hydrophones called SOSUS to pick up enemy submarine signals. Instead of finding enemy ships, they picked up strange whale songs. One specific whale song in fact.

This specific whale was calling out at a frequency not used by any other whale. It's song was different, identifying him as one of a kind.
"It is perhaps difficult to accept that if this was a whale, that there could have been only one of this kind in this large oceanic expanse," Watkins and his colleagues wrote. "Yet in spite of comprehensive careful monitoring year-round, only one call with these characteristics has been found anywhere, and there has been only one source each season."
The Loneliest Whale has made quite a name for himself. In fact, a foundation called 52 The Search went on an oceanic voyage to find the whale. They'll be releasing their documentary in the fall.

So, after four years of reading children's books to these cute little munchkins, I'm finally releasing my own. It's a relief to know my biggest critics are huge fans of my story. My oldest has been carrying it around for days, and I couldn't be happier.

This is for you, my boys!

How has being a writer changed your experience as a reader?

Reading is such a challenge with my two little ones at home, but I make it work. It's so important to read, especially if you're an author. Being a writer has definitely changed my experience as a reader. I only really allow myself to read what I'm writing at the time. I was in the YA world for years while writing my YA series. For me, whatever I'm reading really impacts the way I write. For some reason it puts me in that mood, and I couldn't write good YA while reading something outside of that realm. If I did, it would ultimately bleed into my writing and stand out.

I love YA, but it was really nice to read other stuff while writing my newest manuscript. I finally got to read SHANTARAM (amazing!), indulge in WILD, and now I'm reading all my favorite books from when I was a kid as I write my new MG novel: WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS, MY DANIEL, HATCHET, BANNER IN THE SKY, HARRY POTTER!!

Anyone reading anything awesome lately?!

QUEEN OF CHAOS Review

Persepolae has fallen.

Karnopolis has burned.

As the dark forces of the Undead sweep across what remains of the empire, Nazafareen must obey the summons of a demon queen to save Darius's father, Victor. Burdened with a power she doesn't understand and can barely control, Nazafareen embarks on a perilous journey through the shadowlands to the House-Behind-the-Veil. But what awaits her there is worse than she ever imagined…

A thousand leagues away, Tijah leads a group of children on a desperate mission to rescue the prisoners at Gorgon-e Gaz, the stronghold where the oldest daēvas are kept. To get there, they must cross the Great Salt Plain, a parched ruin occupied by the armies of the night. A chance encounter adds a ghost from the past to their number. But will they arrive in time to avert a massacre?

And in the House-Behind-the-Veil, Balthazar and the Prophet Zarathustra discover that they have more in common than meets the eye. But is it enough to redeem the necromancer's bloodstained soul and thwart his mistress's plans?

As a final showdown looms with Queen Neblis, the truth of the daēvas' origins is revealed and three worlds collide in this thrilling conclusion to the Fourth Element series.

A BIG FAT 5 STARS FROM ME!!
* * * * *

I'm not into the whole reword the back cover thing...so for a recap, check out the blurb above ;)

Let me just say, what an amazing series! I haven't gone into that utterly engrossed, ignore-the-kids-mode in a while. This book did it. I read like a maniac. Seriously, it's an epic journey that is right up there with great fantasy classics if you ask me! I loved the characters, they are strong and well-developed. The world-building is fantastic. I was legitimately sad when it was all over.

I've said this before, about the other books, but the depth of this world reminds me of the Lord of the Rings series. It's really fleshed out and vivid.

Please be more...I'm not ready to be done with these characters.

Someone needs to make a movie out of these books. Get on it Hollywood.

IWSG - Writing Freely

Happy new year everyone! I'm going to try and make a 2017 goal to write every day and to be a better blogger. It's so easy to shut myself away in my writer cave and be anti-social, but blogging is such a great way to get back out there, meet new people with similar interests, and help each other out. It's something I've been terrible at. So, here I am trying to do better. I'll be stopping by as many of the IWSG blogs as I can today :) ...and probably more days after that.

In my writing world, I'm mainly focusing on a new MG fantasy novel lately. After finishing up my more established series, I have to admit it has been fun sort of writing in secret. Nobody knows anything about the manuscripts I'm writing or expects them to come out any time soon. It's been very freeing. I have found myself completely okay with writing something that might be complete crap, and just pushing forward anyway. I actually completed a contemporary YA novel about a month ago, and it's floating out there in agents' hands (eeeeek!) but at least nobody is hanging on the edge of book 2 to read it...

Anyway, I guess the point of this post is that it's nice to be pushing forward fearlessly with my writing. I hope you can find that kind of freedom, too! Who cares if the first draft is crap. Get it out.

I'll leave you with an amazingly eye-opening tweet by author Anna Banks that I've been reminding myself of every night:

"Writers, if you commit to writing just 1k words a day this year, you could write four 80k word books by December 31st."

Even one page a day would get you a 365 page book by the end of the year. Let's do this!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

SEASONS WITHIN Book Blitz & GIVEAWAY!

Seasons Within
Lele Iturrioz
(Acorn Publishing)
Publication date: December 15th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Most teenage girls know their name, where they came from, who they are. Not G, a beautiful redhead with unusual markings on her wrist. She gets her name from a silver locket she keeps around her neck, unaware the engraved letter “G” on its front holds the secret to her past.
G’s life before the age of six has been a mystery to her. Each night for the last twelve years she’s been haunted by the same nightmare—a war. Horrendous beasts, warriors able to wield the four elements, and a boy who saves her by means of blue fire taunt her memory. But on her eighteenth birthday, G’s life begins to unravel. When she meets her new Chemistry professor, a man with an uncanny resemblance to the boy who saves her, she knows there must be more to her dreams.
It’s dangerous not knowing who you are, what you’re capable of, and what future awaits you. Especially when the darkness that slaughtered your entire world, just found you.
EXCERPT:
DUST. Everything was covered in dust and ashes.

Nádúr Noc, the main city of Terra was once beautiful and full of life. Not like that night, the night the darkness descended from the far land of Ifreann.

Now, the round city of Nádúr Noc was dark, burned, and destroyed.

Trees were no longer big and full of different green and golden, bright colors. The river Enosi, a river that surrounded the city with its peaceful crystalline water was now a rapid of blood and death. As for the sky, once bright and blue, it was now filled with dark smoke so thick, it made it nearly impossible to see the remains of the Zansèt Palace; a magnificent castle in the middle of the city made of pearls, flowers, rocks, and vines.

On that night, there was no music and laughter. The only thing anybody could hear were screams and the desolate pleas of the in-habitants. Fear, pain, and unimaginable loss.

This city wasn’t the ruins of any ordinary war, it was the ruins between the light side of nature and the darkest of evils. Beasts and other horrendous creatures destroyed everything that they came across. Killed everyone in their sight. Soulless creatures who lived to torture. Answering to no one, no one except Him, the one who owned the darkness. The one who hell itself was afraid of.

Author Bio:
Major geek by day, hermit writer by night! Love books, sugar gliders and everything that comes in a delicious taco.
I’m the author of the YA fantasy series, Seasons Within
I spend my time writing, planning on writing, reading, drinking coffee like there was no tomorrow, MMA and chilling with my friends and loved ones.

Author's Circle Awards - Accepting Submissions for 2016 Awards

We had a very fun and exciting weekend! Acorn Publishing is growing, and I'm so proud of the group of authors we represent. Holly and I made things official on Saturday and even opened our business account....ooooh, super professional!!

This whole thing started with a love for writing, and with that came a love for WRITERS. We live to help out our fellow authors and that's what Acorn Publishing is about. But the two of us are uber over-achievers and weren't satisfied with just ONE way to assist writers on their journey to become published. So....

We came up with the AUTHOR'S CIRCLE AWARDS!! Since our awards program is fairly new, unknown authors have a great chance of winning. Giving our fellow authors bright and beautiful gold seals to slap on their covers helps us and it helps them! Our company grows and the winners get recognition for their work. By announcing these winners, we get to advertise our company but also promote great books. It's a win win all around.

We're so excited that this Sunday Robyn Engel's book, A Woman on the Verge of Paradise, was featured in the LA Times Newspaper. How exciting is that?

If you're an author or know an author, we hope that you check out our Author's Circle Awards. Hey...maybe even enter...you never know :)

My New Children's Book - THE LONELIEST WHALE

Exciting news! I'm publishing my first children's board book. It's called THE LONELIEST WHALE, and it was inspired by a true BBC story about a whale who sings at a level no other whale can hear. It combs the ocean, calling out for companionship that never comes.

My illustrator (and long-time friend) Dorene Uhrich, is working on the initial sketches, and guess what? I have a sneak peek for you!

We're trying to decide on the best font. Of course we have our favorite, but which do you like better?

Thanks for your input. Read the true BBC story here!

Happy Birthday Me!

Hello blog lovers!

It's my birthday today. YAY!! It's such a great birthday because I have so many exciting things happening in my writerly world.

1. Vegas Valley Book Festival - I'll be signing books in Vegas on October 15th with Acorn Publishing authors, Holly Kammier and Alyssa Petersel. I can't wait. Did somebody say girls night/sleepover?? FUN.

2. Audible Awesomeness - The audio book for OPPRESSION (Children of the Gods #1) was just released. How cool is that? The narrator is amazing. She's an actress who actually lives in San Francisco (where the book takes place). Meant to be, right?

**If anyone is interested in receiving a free copy for review, email me! therrien.jessica@gmail.com

The audio book for UPRISING (Children of the Gods #2) is being recorded right this minute! Hooray!

3. New Books - Some super good news in the writing department. I wrote my first children's book. It's being illustrated right now and will probably be released in 2017! I can't wait to see the drawings.

I've also finished the first draft of a new book. I'm aiming for a 2017 release for that one as well. Keep an eye out for all the juicy details :)

Oh, and REDEMPTION (Children of the Gods #3) is being published in French through AdA. Can't wait to have my whole series in French. Woot!

4. Acorn Publishing - We met with some of the top dogs at the Southern California Writer's Conference in Irvine over the weekend, and our little publishing company will be represented at the San Diego conference. I can't wait! I got my start at the SD SCWC. It will be fun to go back.

We also just signed screenwriter, Joe Gazzam and another of our authors, Alyssa Petersel, just won Kirkus Best Indie book of 2016! Can you believe that? HUGE.

5. Author's Circle - I'm actually most excited about launching a new division of our publishing company called AUTHOR'S CIRCLE | Awards & Reviews. We're always looking for ways to help other authors. If you have a book out, consider entering for one of the awards. It's our first year, so the chances of winning are really high! Check us out:

Binge Blogging

Well I'm back. I've come to the conclusion that I'm a binge blogger. I blog-vomit everywhere then forget I have one...I need some kind of blogger therapy, lol.

In my defense, I have been busy. Ready? Life update.

First and foremost--Babies.

Here are my two little guys in all their cuteness! They're time hogs, but come on, who could be mad about that?

Second--Writing.

My current WIP is at 56,000 words with a goal of about 70,000. It's an adult novel about a young white teenager who moves from the country to LA and gets wrapped up in a world of gangs, guns, and drugs. It draws off of my own life experience and has been a difficult, yet new and interesting, book to write.

I have no clue when it will be done or published, but that's the beauty of publishing my novels through Acorn Publishing. I get to work on my own timeline without feeling the pressure of a deadline. As a super control freak, it feels good to have control of all aspects of my publishing experience.

Speaking of that. The third thing keeping me busy is our growing company, Acorn Publishing. We just launched our new website:

www.acornpublishingLLC.com

Check it out to see what sets us apart from other publishing companies. I'm an author. I've been traditionally published. This is the best of both worlds. If you have a WIP, check us out :)

I'm so proud of how far we've come and all the beautiful covers we get to flaunt under our Acorn Publishing imprint. Aren't they pretty?!
